TEXT

Ego Elthredi do 10 mansas terræ ... exceptis expeditionis obsequio pontis arcisque ædificatione: quisquis diabolica inflammatus invidia istam terram diminuet, vita ipsius in præsenti annorum curriculo in omni miseria luctu et mærore permaneat, et post labilis vitæ defectum eum Acherontis tenebraris custodibus, inter flammivomas hydrarum legiones cum his qui dixerunt, Domine recede a nobis. Anno 982

TRANSLATION

I, Æthelred, give 10 hides of land with the exception of the obligation of military service [and] the building of bridge and fortress: should anyone inflamed by devilish envy diminish that land, may his life in the present age abide in every affliction, lamentation and sorrow, and after the loss of transitory life [may he abide] with the dark guardians of Acheron amongst the flame-belching legions of hydras together with those who said, 'Lord, depart from us.' In the year 982.
