A classified list of
Anglo-Saxon charters on single sheets

This list of Anglo-Saxon charters preserved in their 'original' form, on single sheets of parchment, with associated images of the charters in question, is provided on the 'Kemble' website in the interest of making such an important body of material more readily and widely accessible. The thanks of the BA-RHS Joint Committee on Anglo-Saxon Charters are extended to all the libraries, cathedral archives, county record offices, and other repositories for making this possible. The work remains in progress; and any comments should be directed to the address given on the main menu for contacting the website.

Main Menu

Section I

Royal diplomas and other documents
written in the seventh, eighth, or ninth century
(nos. 1-87)

Listed in order of their apparent or stated date; includes originals, contemporary or later copies of apparently authentic documents, and documents seemingly 'forged' before c. 900. The notes give some indication of status, but it is often difficult to make a clear distinction between these categories. Vernacular documents (including wills and miscellaneous records) occur at the end of the section (nos. 78-87), listed in order of their apparent or stated date.

Section II

Royal diplomas and other documents
written in the tenth or eleventh century
(nos. 88-294)

Documents which are judged for the purposes of this list to be 'originals', or 'apparent originals', are listed in order of their apparent or stated date. Documents which are judged to be later copies, or 'forgeries', are listed in order of their number in Sawyer's catalogue.

Section III

Charters written in the twelfth century or later
(nos. 295-318)

Documents are listed in order of their number in Sawyer's catalogue.
