Anglo-Saxon coins
under construction
(selection of coins and scanning of images still in progress)
Coins (mainly silver pennies) constitute a vital source of evidence for our understanding of many of the basic political, administrative and economic developments in England from the beginning of the seventh century to the end of the eleventh. Some of them are also very beautiful objects in their own right (though the former director of a major museum liked to describe them as bent milkbottle tops). No historian of the period can afford to disregard numismatic evidence.
For coins in the British Museum, try searching their Compass database, which contains excellent images of numerous Anglo-Saxon objects. A search for 'anglo-saxon' produces several coins, with text and images.
For some serious online numismatics, go here (Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge).
