ANGLO-SAXON CHARTERS

Provisional texts of unpublished charters

The most important set of texts which has come to light since the publication of Peter Sawyer's Anglo-Saxon Charters: an Annotated List and Bibliography, in 1968, was identified in a late-sixteenth-century cartulary of Ilford Hospital (Hatfield House, MS. Ilford Hospital 1/6), derived from a (lost) cartulary of Barking abbey in Essex. Other texts (in Latin and in the vernacular) have come to light in early modern transcripts of material derived from the archives of Athelney abbey (Somerset), Abbotsbury abbey (Dorset), St Paul's cathedral (London), St Albans abbey (Hertfordshire), and Westminster abbey.
