IN THE BRITISH LIBRARY

The single-sheet charters in the British Library are derived from several collections put together in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries:

Sir Robert Cotton (1571-1631) and Sir Thomas Cotton (see below), from the archives of various religious houses, and also via Sir Edward Dering from the archives of Christ Church, Canterbury;
Sir Edward Dering, from the archives of Christ Church, Canterbury (acquired subsequently by Thomas Astle);
Sir Simonds D'Ewes, from the archives of Winchester Cathedral and Bury St Edmunds (bought from D'Ewes's grandson by Humfrey Wanley, acting on behalf of Sir Edward Harley);
Sir Edward Harley, from D'Ewes, and other sources (now among the Harley Charters);
Sir Christopher Hatton, from the archives of Worcester cathedral (now among the Additional Charters);
Thomas Astle (1735-1803), from the collections of Dering, Peter Le Neve, and others (now among the Stowe Charters);
and others (Campbell, Sloane).

I. FROM THE COTTONIAN LIBRARY

The majority of the charters collected by Sir Robert Cotton were pasted by him into a large portfolio, kept in his library with the books in the 'Augustus' press. Several other charters, including some which entered the library after Sir Robert's death, were kept in separate drawers. The charters originally in the portfolio ('Augustus II') were removed from the portfolio in modern times, and were mounted and re-bound in a series of separate volumes, which are not separately numbered. The charters kept in the drawers have also been mounted and bound in a series of separate volumes. It is useful, when ordering charters in the Department of Manuscripts, to know which charters are to be found bound together in a single volume.
