ENGLISH HISTORICAL DOCUMENTS c. 500 - 1042
ed. Dorothy Whitelock

The contents of English Historical Documents were arranged by the late Professor Whitelock in a way which has the effect of separating from each other documents which might more usefully have been grouped together. The so-called 'Secular Narrative Sources' (including the Chronicle, Asser, skaldic poetry, extracts from continental sources, etc.) are followed by 'Charters and Laws' (in two chronological series, with guild regulations and manumissions) and in turn by 'Ecclesiastical Sources' (comprising Bede, saints' Lives, correspondence, and some vernacular poetry and prose). It is one sign of the progress made in Anglo-Saxon studies since the early 1950s that this arrangement is perhaps not as helpful or meaningful as would have been intended.

The list below (compiled by SDK, April 1996) originated as an attempt to re-cast the contents of EHD in an order which might be thought to make better sense of the material, and which might help to make the book easier to use by those in search of documents relating to a particular subject or period. References to other 'documents' not included in EHD will be inserted at appropriate points. The list is intended for use, in conjunction with EHD itself (reprinted in 1996), as a guide to the primary sources for the history of Anglo-Saxon England. The numbering relates to the order of contents of EHD (2nd ed., 1979).
