<A register of recorded visits of Englishmen to Rome 600-1066, e.g. on pilgrimage, on business, for pallium, alms to St Peter, collection of relics, etc. The references below do not yet represent a serious attempt to collect all of the information bearing on visits to Rome from the seventh century onwards.>

'After he [Oftfor] had spent some further time in sacred studies there [in Kent], he decided to go to Rome too, which in those days was considered to be act of great merit.' Bede, HE iv. 23.

Ine, king of the West Saxons, went to Rome in 726. 'At this time many Englishmen, nobles and commons, layfolk and clergy, men and women, were eager to do the same thing.' Bede, HE v. 7. <Cf. Levison, p. 37, citing Bede Chron 725.>
