Dame Sue Carr (1983) is a High Court Judge of the Queens’ Bench Division. She read law at Trinity College, Cambridge. She went on to have a distinguished career during her 25 years at the Bar, 10 of them in silk, practising at 4 New Square Chambers. She became head of chambers in 2012. Her principal areas of practice lay in the field of general commercial and professional liability law. She was named Professional Negligence Silk of the Year at the Chambers & Partners’ Bar Awards 2012 and received the European Women in Business Law Lifetime Achievement Award in 2016. Dame Sue is a past chairman of the Professional Negligence Bar Association, the Bar Standard Board’s Complaints Committee, and a former Complaints Commissioner to the International Criminal Court in the Hague. She chaired the Stakeholder Advisory Panel to the Office for Legal Complaints.
Dame Sue was appointed to the High Court in June 2013, receiving the customary appointment as a Dame Commander of The Most Excellent Order of the British Empire. She became a nominated Judge of the Commercial Court and the Technology and Construction Court in 2014. She was a member of the Investigatory Powers Tribunal from 2014 to 2016 and the Judicial College Board. She is now the Senior Presiding Judge of the Midland Circuit. She is a Governing Bencher of the Inner Temple and past chairman of its Education and Training Committee.
Dame Sue will be sworn in as a Lady Justice of the Court of Appeal in April 2020.
