Archie Norman is one of the most highly respected businessmen in the UK. Becoming chief executive of ASDA – and the youngest FTSE-100 head at the age of 37- he took over an almost bankrupt company with £1bn of debt.
He delivered a spectacular turnaround, transforming it into the second largest supermarket group before being sold to Wal-Mart for an eight times multiple of the starting share price. The turnaround was based on his belief that the power of a company’s potential lies in its people, and if you raise employees’ skills and morale the bottom line will follow.
He then repeated the feat with the second largest retailer in Australia, leading the largest turnaround project at the time in global retailing, doubling the company profits.
In recent years he has managed an equally impressive turnaround of fortunes at the helm of ITV, overseeing a trebling in profits.
Between these turnarounds, he was Chief Executive of the Conservative Party before taking over the helm at Energis – doubling its value before selling to Cable & Wireless.
