Barclays is at a crossroads, facing issues that will determine its future. An illustrious name with a history of innovation, Barclays was the first retail bank to operate internationally, the first bank in the world to introduce cash dispensers, and the only British retail bank to create a major investment banking operation.
But that position is not without controversy. After the recent retreat of Deutsche Bank from investment banking, Barclays is now the last fully universal European bank with a strong investment banking operation left standing. Supporters regard Barclays’ commitment as long-term and visionary. It is a debate that goes to the heart of the future of banking.
At the same time Barclays has been investing heavily in technology and Artificial Intelligence, a journey into an unknown endgame.
Leading the bank at this critical moment in its development is Jes Staley. Formerly the Head of investment banking at JP Morgan, he helped lead it from being a purely commercial bank to the very top in investment banking. This evening he will be talking about his journey in banking, the several crises he has faced, and how he sees the critical challenges now facing Barclays and the industry.
The conversation will be followed by a drinks reception.
