Apprentice Gardener

We are looking for a highly motivated and enthusiastic Apprentice Gardener to join our ambitious team at the historic setting of Trinity College.

Trinity College is located in the centre of Cambridge with a site extending approximately 1 mile from Sydney Street across The Backs to Grange Road.  The largest College in Cambridge, Trinity has around 650 undergraduates, 300 postgraduates and 170 Fellows with 350 staff.

The jobholder will be part of a friendly, energetic and passionate team of 12 Gardeners plus trainees. The Head Gardener, Deputy Head Gardener and three Senior Gardeners oversee the daily running of the department.

The role will involve work in a wide range of garden styles from formal fine lawns to herbaceous borders, woodland areas to riverside parkland and wall shrubs and climbers to nursery work.  The post holder will work with the experienced team to develop the basic professional horticultural skills, uniquely centred around College Gardens, which are required to ensure that the maintenance of all garden areas is carried out to the highest possible standards.

You must have a real interest in gardening and be willing to learn.  You should be able to work on your own for some periods of time and equally to work comfortably as part of our team. The successful candidate must have an energy and interest for working outdoors and in all weathers.

A willingness to adapt to our work methods and standards, and to partake in any necessary training to better fulfil your role within the team is essential.
