Head Porter

An outstanding opportunity has arisen for the appointment of a Head Porter at Trinity College, Cambridge, following a recent retirement. Highly attractive salary plus benefits package commensurate with this senior leadership role.

Trinity College was founded by Henry VIII in 1546, and is the largest of the Cambridge Colleges.  The College has some of the most outstanding historic buildings in Cambridge and exists to give its members a rewarding, richly resourced, and intellectually inspiring place in which to pursue their education, learning and research.

Trinity is home to around 700 undergraduates, 350 postgraduates, over 190 Fellows and 400 non-academic staff.  College life is lively and diverse. The community at Trinity has changed greatly over the centuries but the strong academic tradition has been maintained.  College is forward looking, and continues to be renowned worldwide for its academic excellence, strong community and high profile events.

The role of Head Porter, a senior leadership role, is crucial to College life and involves wide ranging demands and challenges.  The post holder will make a vital contribution to the smooth running of the College, through collaboration across a varied and diverse community, and a large estate.  The successful candidate will be responsible for the development, enhancement, and implementation and monitoring of the College’s security and safety and will be expected to shape the future direction of this critical function.

The Head Porter will also provide first class ‘front of house’ leadership, building a culture of strong customer service, and heading up a team of around 40 staff. An exceptional management style, with proven extensive management experience, that builds an inclusive and very high performing team is essential.  Discretion regarding highly sensitive welfare, personnel and security matters is also essential.

Applicants must be able to demonstrate extensive experience of interacting with a wide range of people, be able to remain calm under pressure and manage fast paced and high profile situations professionally and confidently.  They will have a very strong ability in problem solving under pressure in a variety of contexts.

The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate exceptional leadership, management and communication skills across different internal and external groups.
