Frequently Asked Questions

Why support an Undergraduate Bursary?

Most undergraduate students will take out loans to cover living expenses. However, these often fall short of what they need to keep up with the rising costs of student life. The Class of 1984 Fund aims to alleviate this financial pressure, helping students to concentrate on their studies without worrying about unexpected expenses.

Why create an endowed fund?

By establishing an endowed fund, the Class of 1984 are creating a student support mechanism that will exist in perpetuity. Your support will enable Trinity to maintain its leadership in providing valued financial assistance to current and future students.

Why do we need the Class of 1984 Fund if there’s already a Cambridge Bursary Scheme and Trinity Maintenance Grant?

Many students who receive support from the Cambridge Bursary Scheme and a Trinity Maintenance Grant still have to take out a loan. More information on the Cambridge Bursary Scheme and Trinity Maintenance Grant can be found here.  In short, Trinity has led the way in significantly increasing the help provided to students in financial need and is hoping for our support to ensure this can be delivered now and in the future.

How is the bursary awarded?

The Class of 1984 Bursary will be awarded as part of the Cambridge Bursary Scheme, with the fund being focussed on areas proposed by the Class of 1984 Steering Group on behalf of the Class of 1984. The actual Bursary recipients will be determined by Trinity.  Recipient information will be included in the annual report from the Alumni Relations and Development Office. The Steering Group has proposed to Trinity that the Class of 1984 Fund should, at least initially, prioritise supporting medical students who are particularly badly served by the current government funding scheme.

How will Trinity recognise the initiative?

As a supporter of the Class of 1984 Fund, you name will appear in Trinity’s annual list of donors. Where applicable, supporters will also be invited to join Trinity’s 1546 Society or Clock Tower Circle.
