Review: Trinity Golf Day 2024

The annual ‘Trinity Golf Day’ took place on Thursday 27 June, 2024 on the Old Course at the iconic Gog Magog Golf Club in Cambridge. We were joined by golfing alumni from up and down the country for an enjoyable 18 holes of (friendly) competition. Tricky conditions greeted our players, especially on the back 9, but spirits were kept high thanks to the fabulous views back towards Cambridge and good company.

The weather was fair as, after a sandwich and chips lunch, the players congregated on the first tee with an encouraging expanse of grass ahead of them. Looks, however, proved to be deceiving as the wind picked up sending a selection of shots off in different directions to their planned targets…

Despite that, some excellent moments followed, and while no player managed to put together a completely consistent round, everyone had their moments, as was proven by the spread of prize winners.

Winner Chris Danziger (1966) with The Sandy Bradbrook Trophy

In terms of the scores, Chris Danziger (1966) was crowned the over-all winner, closely followed by Mike Molesworth (1975) and Nigel Taylor (1975). The competition uses the Stableford scoring format to help level the playing field a little. Chris said the following upon lifting the Sandy Bradbrook Trophy:

If you win a competition with 30 Stableford points, at least no one can accuse you of being a ringer. This result should encourage all incompetent golfers to turn out for what is a very enjoyable day”

In addition to the overall competition players also competed in some individual hole challenges. Mike Molesworth followed up his overall second-place finish by emerging victorious as ‘nearest the pin in one’, and Peter Larkin (1964) taking the ‘nearest the pin in two’ prize. Jack Barlow (2011) showed us all how it was done with the driver, comfortably winning the  ‘longest drive’.

This event was the final one organised by outgoing Trinity Golf Society President, Peter Larkin. The prize giving dinner later that evening in The Allhusen Room in College provided an opportunity for everyone to thank him for his efforts. Alumni Relations Manager, Phil Pass, said:

Another fantastic Trinity Golf Day has been and gone, and it is in no small part thanks to the efforts of Peter that we have been able to have this event year after year – he has been the driving force, keeping an eagle eye on arrangements to iron out any possible wrinkles and to deliver well above-par Golf Days for us all to enjoy. A little birdie told me that Peter is looking forward to returning to the competition next year with his sights set on challenging for the Sandy Bradbrook Trophy once again.

Thank you, Peter, and we are grateful to Nigel Taylor for taking the reins.”
