Dame Sally Davies raises the rainbow flag

Dame Sally Davies, Master of Trinity, raised the rainbow flag beside Great Gate to mark the beginning of LGBT+ History Month on Saturday 1 February to the applause of students, Fellows, staff and passersby.

Dame Sally said it was ‘an absolute thrill’ to raise the flag, which will fly throughout LGBT+ History Month 2020.

I am very proud that we are doing this because what it shows you is that as a community we are open, we are welcoming.

I never expected to be the first woman Master here but it shows that we are broadening. It’s a steady job.

But if we look back I am betting that some of those close bonds between our old men Fellows in eons past were closer than just platonic friendships. We have always been open to our LGBTQ+ friends.

Trinity’s LGBTQ+ Liaison Fellow, Dr Anna-Maria Hartmann, said: It was fantastic to be there when our first female Master raised the rainbow flag at Great Gate this morning!’

Prior to the flag raising, the Master hosted a celebratory breakfast to which Trinity students, Fellows and staff were invited.
