Trinity’s Senior Tutor Professor Catherine Barnard has been appointed to the Cambridge Professorship in European Law, which was established in 1994 and previously held by Sir Alan Dashwood KC and Kenneth Armstrong.
An academic in the Cambridge Law Faculty for many years, Professor Barnard is the author of leading texts on EU law and most recently has published empirical research into the realities of the operation of EU law on communities in Great Yarmouth.
Professor Louise Gullifer, the Chair of the Faculty of Law at Cambridge, said:
I am delighted that Professor Barnard will be taking up the role of Professor of European Law in the Faculty. She has contributed very significantly to the scholarship, teaching and administration of the Faculty for many years, and we very fortunate that we will be able to benefit from her wealth of expertise and experience in this very important academic leadership role.
Professor Barnard has received the University of Cambridge’s Pilkington Prize for teaching (2019) and Cambridge University Students’ Union best lecturer prize (2023.)
Professor Barnard is a Senior Fellow at UK in a Changing Europe, has given evidence to select committees on legal issues related to Brexit, and provided expert commentary to national and international media on the issue.

Professor Barnard is author of The Substantive Law of the EU: The Four Freedoms, (OUP 2022) and with Steve Peers, European Union Law (OUP 2023).
Her most recent publication, with Fiona Costello and Sarah Fraser Butlin, is Low-Paid EU Migrant Workers: The House, the Town, the Street (Bristol University Press 2024).
