Trinity Research Talks: Professor Peter Sarris

December 14, 2023 at 18:00 to 19:00 GMT

Professor Peter Sarris read Modern History at Balliol College, Oxford (1990-2003), after which he was elected to a Prize Fellowship (by examination) at All Souls College, Oxford. In 2000, he came to Cambridge as a University Lecturer and was elected a Fellow of Trinity. He is currently a Professor of Late Antique, Medieval and Byzantine Studies and has published extensively on the history of the Early Middle Ages and Byzantium. He is also a leading authority on the ‘Age of Justinian’ more generally.

In this talk, Professor Sarris presents his newest work: a modern biography of Justinian that radically reassesses the life of a man who rose from humble beginnings to become one of the world’s most powerful rulers in history. This vibrant retelling of Justinian brings the emperor to life and paints an intimately complex picture of how he was, in many ways, a very modern Emperor.
