Two Trinity Law undergraduates have won an international competition designed to test negotiation skills in the legal profession.

Guan Rong Tan and Yee Rei Lim emerged victorious in the final of the Herbert Smith Freehills Kramer National Law University Delhi International Negotiation Competition (INC) against University of Technology Sydney.

The INC took place at the National Law University in Delhi in August, where students from top universities around the world were invited to test their skills in legal negotiation.

Trinity student Yee Rei Lim, now in his second year, said:

It was a great honour to represent Cambridge and achieve success on the international stage. Being able to travel to India for the first time was exciting, and the experience was both intellectually and culturally eye-opening!

We would both like to thank the College for its generosity in supporting our journey, without which none of this would have been possible. As Guan Rong and I continue our journey in Cambridge, we look forward to developing a community of commercial negotiators to defend our title in future editions of the competition!

This year was the second time a Cambridge team have won the INC, which is now in its tenth year. Designed to give law students the opportunity to develop their skills as negotiators in an international environment, the INC has been carefully structured to simulate legal negotiations across a wide range of areas.

Negotiation is a core practical legal skill – not only to resolve disputes but also to agree terms of contracts and represent clients in litigation and mediation.

During the INC participants undertake a series of negotiations that closely imitate real-life examples. In the final session, the negotiation centred around a business deal between an electric vehicle company and an internal combustion engine company. Teams submit a plan prior to the competition, and each negotiation session lasts an hour.

Yee Rei and Guan took part in the INC with the support of the Donoghue and Stevenson Fund.
