Trinity Research Talk: Dr Thant Myint-U

Peacemaker: U Thant, the United Nations, and the Untold Story of the 1960s

Join us for an insightful research talk from Honorary Fellow Dr Thant Myint-U (1991), to discuss his latest publication: Peacemaker: U Thant, The United Nations, and the Untold Story of the 1960s.

Drawing on newly declassified documents, historian Thant Myint-U reveals startling new information about his grandfather, the first non-European UN Secretary-General, U Thant’s bold interventions during the Cold War, including his crucial role in preventing nuclear war during the Cuban Missile Crisis, his mediation between India and Pakistan and in the Middle East, his challenges against America’s war in Vietnam, and his battles against white supremacy in the Congo and southern Africa.

The talk will be followed by a Q&A session and drinks.

Biography: Dr Thant Myint-U 

“Dr. Thant Myint-U was educated at Harvard and Trinity College, Cambridge where he completed his PhD in history and was elected a Title A Fellow in 1994.

Over the 1990s, he served on three United Nations peacekeeping operations, in Cambodia and the former Yugoslavia, and from 2000-2007 with the U.N. Secretariat in New York, including as the Director of Policy Planning in the Department of Political Affairs and Senior Office in the Executive Office of the Secretary-General.

From 2010-2021 he led reform efforts in Burma (Myanmar), including as a peace mediator, a presidential adviser, the founder and chair of the Yangon Heritage Trust, and the chair of U Thant House.

Thant Myint-U is the author of five books, most recently Peacemaker, and is the recipient of several awards, including the Padma Shri from the President of India.”
