Trinity’s first LGBT+ flowerbed is in full bloom! On the Brewhouse Lawn, facing the river, the striking new flowerbed is dazzling in the spring sunshine and attracting the attention of visitors and members of College alike.
The hard work by Trinity’s gardeners began last year, with a new bed dug in the dark winter months.
The first shoots appeared early in 2019. Fences had to be erected and then fortified against geese and ducks. The flowering bulbs grew, slowly and irregularly. The gardeners added more plants – two types of grass – to the green strip.
A warm spell brought forth hundreds of crocuses, hyacinths and tulips in their single-coloured rows. Then weather reports of frosty nights so alarmed the Head Gardener, Tom Hooijenga, that he returned with horticultural fleece one evening to keep the tulips warm and snug!
Tom said:
It was a clever idea of the Fellows to create a Pride flag of flowering bulbs in a prominent location at Trinity. We always knew it would be a challenge, with the vagaries of the weather and different bulbs flowering at different times. The green row in particular was a bit testing. But the response has been terrific and it’s been worth the work by all the gardeners involved.
