The annual ‘Trinity Golf Day’ took place on Thursday 8 June, 2023 at the scenic and friendly Girton Golf Club in Cambridge. Alumni travelled from across the country to attend and enjoy 18 holes of friendly competition, and more importantly, good company on the challenging fairways and greens of the course.

A hot and clear day greeted the players on the first tee no doubt some, wondering whether it may be appropriate to follow their ball into the numerous water hazards on the course to cool down.

In terms of the scores, Chris Watson (1971) was crowned the over-all winner, closely followed by Tim Barson (1971) and Chris Danziger (1966). The competition uses the Stableford scoring format to help level the playing field a little. Chris said the following upon lifting the Sandy Bradbrook Trophy:

I was delighted and surprised to win the Trinity Alumni Golf Trophy held at Girton Golf Club, which was in excellent condition, and a good test of golf. I was also delighted and surprised by the weather conditions. Being the 1st hot and sunny day after 3 weeks of being dry, cold and overcast in the East of England. The turnout of 17 players was much improved on the one previous Trinity Alumni Golf Day I had attended. I would like to apologise to my fellow participants for not attending the dinner in College, and thus missing out on the presentation of prizes, and conversations. I look forward to defending the cup next year, and will make sure I book the dinner as well as the golf!”

In addition to the overall competition players also competed in ‘nearest the pin’ and ‘longest drive’ challenges. Charles Garraway (1968) retained his ‘nearest the pin’ winning streak thanks to a beauty of a tee shot that he almost holed. The ‘longest drive’ was won by our Alumni Relations Manager, Phil Pass, who said:

It was fabulous to see such a good group come together again and renew those rivalries among the year groups. Please take it as read that I am suitably embarrassed at winning the ‘longest drive’… I am already looking forward to 2024 where a new group of winners will be crowed!”
