In Brief…

I’m currently Emerita Fellow in Law at Trinity, having served as a College Lecturer in Law (Title C Fellow) from October 1999 to September 2022. During my academic career, I specialised in family law, particularly the law relating to family finances, and I held the position of Professor of Family Law & Policy in the University before leaving full-time academia to embark on a second career in horticulture. Having thought I’d left the law behind, I find that I have – by accident – become a legal scholar of Agatha Christie…

Profile

During my academic career, I worked on the law regarding family finances, particularly on divorce and on ending of non-marital cohabiting relationships. I served two years on secondment to the Law Commission for England & Wales in order to be a team lawyer on the Commission’s project on financial remedies on the breakdown of cohabitation. My research encompassed both doctrinal and empirical research, latterly undertaking a major study of financial remedies orders with Professor Emma Hitchings (Bristol). Alongside my academic research and publication activities, I undertook an extensive range of public-facing activities, working alongside practitioners on Family Justice Council and Pensions Advisory Group projects that resulted in the publication of guidance for lawyers/judges and, separately, for lay people who find themselves having to deal with the fraught and technical issue of dealing with finances on divorce. As an academic door tenant at 1 Hare Court, I also consulted on a number of leading cases relating to family law matters in the Supreme Court and Court of Appeal.

In my “retirement”, I am collobarating with Professor Rebecca Probert (Exeter) on a project communicating legal issues in the work of Agatha Christie to her readership, to enchance their appreciation of her work.
