Item: Detail of a carving
Date: 17th century
Much of the wood carving in the Wren Library is by Grinling Gibbons. He used lime which is naturally pale in colour and is shown to great effect against the darker wood of the bookcases. The carvings commonly depict mythical creatures, fruit and foliage and, in this example, acorns.
