A leaf from the Gutenberg Bible
Mainz, 1454
Johannes Gutenberg, a German blacksmith and goldsmith, revolutionised the world with printing from cast type. The invention of printing allowed the production of multiple copies of a book in a shorter time than was needed to produce a single copy in the age of manuscripts.
The famous 42-line Bible, printed by Gutenberg in 1455, thus marked the beginning of the modern book.
