I vividly remember taking my position in the choir stalls during my first rehearsal with Trinity Choir. The majestic image of the Chapel in the background behind our conductor, Stephen Layton, is one that will forever be imprinted on my mind’s eye. But it was only in the coming weeks that I began to appreciate the gravity that the space commands.

The Chapel was built by two Queens, Mary and Elizabeth I, in the mid-sixteenth century. Since then, it has evolved to become the space that we as a Choir have the privilege of filling with sound three times a week. During services, my eyes often wander around the building. I find I’m especially drawn to this painting, which hangs above the altar.

It is Benjamin West’s dramatic depiction of the defeat of Satan by the forces of St Michael, based on the account in the Book of Revelation. That’s the word I would use to describe taking your place in the choir stalls in Trinity’s Chapel.

It’s an experience of revelation.
