Living with greatness day in, day out for three years you become immune to it. You happily cross Great Court without really looking at it any more.
This is what Great Court became to me. Something grand that is absolutely familiar – intimate, even.
During most of my time as a student I wore the cheap, black, elasticated plimsolls familiar from primary school. It was a choice of footwear determined by a combination of limited finances and a dubious student sense of style.
Crossing Great Court became a daily discomfort underfoot as I negotiated the various formations of the cobbles.
Why I didn’t just stick to the paved paths? I don’t know. But clearly I have changed little in the intervening years. Coming back to Trinity to take part in Pairings, I again found myself straying from the path in insufficiently robust footwear.
