Pairings: Ian Blatchford

Senior Porter
Ian Blatchford - Pairings

I have chosen a picture of Great Gate, perhaps because it reminds me of other gates I used to pass through. I have only been working at Trinity College since September 2015 after 20 years in the
Prison Service.

You might think that no two worlds could be more different but the roles of Prison Officer and College Porter have quite a few things in common (without the obvious extremes). We both carry large sets of keys, some of which unlock closed gates. The team of Porters at Trinity is responsible for security, first aid, fire safety, care, compassion, patrols, post – duties that are also carried out by Prison Officers.

However, in my College role I have not been sworn at, assaulted or worse! Gates at Trinity and at prisons can be opened, allowing people to pass in both directions, just as opportunities can arise
for students and prisoners. Will those opportunities be taken? Where will they lead students and inmates in the future?
