Living History: Sarah de Mas
My defining moment at Trinity
In the mid-1980s there were few mature students mostly male. As a thirty-something female undergraduate with children we were embraced by the College. Potential clashes with school timetables were absorbed; my children were invited to College breakfasts, garden parties, punting on the river and even lunch in the Master’s Lodge. Lady Huxley made the two girls, then aged 10 and 14, honorary ladies of Trinity – the College was so rich in spirit, time and generosity.
Born and raised in Uruguay, Cambridge University had, for me, almost mythical status, up there with King Arthur and the Round Table, so to find a place that was so supportive, encouraging the very best from you whilst also demanding the highest standards, was revelatory
I seem to recall I achieved a 1st, 2nd and 3rd at various points during my studies. I then worked happily for many years in a field I had not studied. Trinity prepares you to live a challenging and fuller life.
