My defining moment at Trinity

The defining moment of my short time at Trinity was the Russian dinner at the start of Lent term. Trinity’s own Dr Widdis along with Murray Edwards’ Dr Polonsky hosted a night of celebration for a small group of ab initio Russianists of all different years. This dinner served as a turning point of my first year. After hearing about the experiences of the Fellows and of older students, listening to them recite Russian poetry and sing songs, a fresh passion for my subject ignited in me. I became so excited to carry on my studies and to experience the culture I had been reading about in the future. This was the moment that proved to me why I wanted to be studying here and not anywhere else: here your subject is more than just a subject, you absorb it into your life and it becomes part of you. And although it is a lot of hard work and I struggle more often than not, never before in my life have I actually been excited to study.
